Title: Sustainable Energy: Ideality and Reality

A panel of 5x scientists will be invited and announced on site, to facilitate discussion.


Abstract:


This seminar will discuss the pathways of sustainable energy and low carbon energy as well as their impact on climate change. The current energy production and consumption in the US, Germany, and Japan will be reviewed. The ideality of reality of sustainable energy triangles will be discussed. Advanced engine technologies and the development of renewable biofuels for carbon reduction in ground and air transportation and electricity generation will be presented. The idea of integration of renewable electricity with hydrogen, natural gas and electricity grid for low carbon transportation and vehicle electrification and smart ability will be introduced. Technical challenges for the development of advanced engines, biofuel production and certification, energy storage, high energy density and fast charging batteries will be discussed.

Speaker Profile

Dr. Yiguang Ju is a Robert Porter Patterson Professor and the Director of Sustainable Energy Program at Princeton University. He received his bachelor degree from Tsinghua in 1986. Before he joined Princeton, he also taught at Tohoku University and Tsinghua University. Prof. Ju’s research interests include combustion, propulsion, and sustainable energy. He serves as the chair of the US Sections of Combustion Institute and a board of director of the International Combustion Institute. He is a fellow of ASME and the Combustion Institute, and a distinguished visiting fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK. He received many awards including the NASA Director’s Certificate of Appreciation award, the Humboldt Foundation Bessel research award, and the International Award from Japanese Society of Combustion. He served as in the NASA committee for Rocket Study, National Academy of Science Committee for NASA microgravity research assessment, and a DOE committee for National Laboratories combustion program review.

The Chinese Association for Science and Technology – Washington DC Chapter (CAST-DC) was founded on Dec 11, 1993, as a not-for-profit and non-political organization registered in the USA. It is a local chapter of The Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST-USA). CAST-DC Chapter includes over 1, 000 members from famous research organizations such as NIH, FDA, NASA, NIST, JHU, UMCP as well as local high-tech companies in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.


The missions of the CAST-DC are to promote academic exchanges and professional development of CAST-USA members; to serve as a bridge for the collaboration between China and United States in personnel, science and technology, information, economic, trade and other areas.
