Nanoscience and nanotechnology as well as the resultant nanomaterials hold promising futures for world’s challenging issues and critical applications. Our research focuses on fundamental science and engineering questions motivated by the creation of materials on the nanometer scale (1 nm=10-9 m) with applications in energy, environment and medicine. We are developing chemical methods for synthesizing well defined nanoparticles (typically 1-100 nm in size), including atomically precise nanoclusters, shape- and size-controlled nanocrystals, hybrid nano-architectures, and inorganic/polymer nanocomposites. In-depth characterizations of the physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles are carried out with microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. Many previous mysteries at the nanoscale have now been revealed, such as the periodicities in nanoparticles, structural isomerization, chirality, and the nanoscale self-assembly monolayer (SAM) structure, and. Such nanoparticles hold great potential in technology, including chemical catalysis, energy conversion, optics, and sensing applications.

Prof. Rongchao Jin is the Thomson-Reuters Most Cited Faculty for years 2014, 2015, 2016, and is a tenured Full Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Chemistry Department. He received his B.S. in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1995, and M.S. in Physical Chemistry/Catalysis from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998, and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northwestern University (in Illinois) in 2003. After his Ph.D., he worked at the University of Chicago as Research Associate and studied femtosecond laser excited second harmonic generation (SHG) from single metal nanoparticles. In 2006, he joined the chemistry faculty of Carnegie Mellon University and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and Full Professor in 2015. His current research interests are atomically precise nanoparticles, nano-optics, and catalysis. Prof. Jin is a world-renowned expert in nano-science and nano-materials with very high Google Scholar citation indices (h-index 70).
The Chinese Association for Science and Technology - Washington DC Chapter (CAST-DC) was founded on Dec 11, 1993 at University of Maryland. It is a not-for-profit and non-political organization. It is a local chapter of The Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST-USA). CAST-USA has her headquarter located in the New York City. CAST-DC Chapter include members from Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
The missions of the CAST-DC are to promote academic exchanges and professional development of CAST-USA members; to serve as a bridge for the collaboration between China and United States in personnel, science and technology, information, economic, trade and other areas.
